Padjadjaran University’s Faculty of Psychology implements a system of academic guidance based on a psychological approach through an academic advisor program, which is integrated with counseling services. Based on the Guardian Lecturer’s Guidebook, which is an operational reference, each guardian lecturer is responsible for monitoring students’ academic development as well as becoming the first point of contact to detect psychological issues in students. This mechanism utilizes the lecturers’ competencies, most of whom are clinical or educational psychology graduates, allowing early identification of academic stress symptoms or difficulties in social adaptation through regular meetings every two weeks.
The role of academic advisor in the Faculty extends beyond that of an academic advisor to include being a psychological companion who supports the overall well-being of students. With a strong psychological background, academic advisor can give early counseling, which helps students manage academic pressure and challenges in adapting to campus life. This personal approach strengthens the relationship of trust between lecturers and students, so that students feel more comfortable sharing and seeking solutions for the various problems they face.
Other than that, academic advisors also play an active role in facilitating the potential of students through continuous monitoring and guidance suitable for individual needs. They effectively help students connect with the various supporting services provided by the faculty, such as advanced counseling or self-development activities. Thus, this guardianship system not only supports academic success but also helps shape students who are tougher mentally and are ready to face the dynamics of campus life.
The active involvement of academic advisors in accompanying students holistically is in line with global efforts to create an educational environment that is healthy, inclusive, and sustainable. Through a structured and responsive guardianship system, the Faculty of Psychology at Padjadjaran University contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals that emphasize the importance of quality of life, mental health, and strengthening individual capacity. Thus, the guardian lecturer program not only impacts academic success, but also becomes a part of the institution’s commitment to develop a strong younger generation that can compete whether nationally or internationally.
