History
History
The inception of the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) can be traced back to a pivotal discussion between Colonel Dr. Soemantri Hardjoprakoso, then Head of the Army Psychology Center, and a group of military psychologists. The question at the heart of this discussion was: who would nurture the future generation of Army Psychology cadres? Captain Soemitro Kartosoedjono, Dipl. Psych. wholeheartedly embraced this vision, and the subsequent step involved reaching out to the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Unpad, an institution recognized for its esteemed faculty, including Dr. W.A. Gerungan, Drs. J. Wulur, and Prof. Dr. Mochtar Buchori.
History of the Faculty of Psychology
The idea of establishing a Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) emerged from discussions between the Head of the Army Psychology Center, Colonel Dr. Soemantri Hardjoprakoso, and his psychology officers. The growing need for qualified psychologists within the Indonesian Army prompted the question of how to nurture future generations of psychology professionals. The idea was well-received by Captain Soemitro Kartosoedjono, Dipl. Psych, who took the initiative to contact the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at UNPAD, which was recognized for its strong faculty, including Dr. W.A. Gerungan, Drs. J. Wulur, and Prof. Dr. Mochtar Buchori.
A collaboration was established after discussions between Colonel Dr. Soemantri Hardjoprakoso and Prof. Sadarjoen. Captain Soemitro Kartosoedjono tasked Captain Bob Dengah with organizing a meeting with FKIP UNPAD to form a preparatory committee for the establishment of the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Padjadjaran.
On August 11, 1961, Ministerial Decree No. 35/SEK/PU/61 officially established the preparatory committee, with Colonel Dr. Soemantri Hardjoprakoso as the Chair and Captain Bob Dengah, Dr. W.A. Gerungan and representatives from the Army Psychology Center and FKIP UNPAD as members.
Captain Bob Dengah and Dr. W.A. Gerungan were assigned to prepare the technical aspects and curriculum from the preparatory level to the Bachelor's degree. The Army Psychology Center at Jalan Sangkuriang 17 provided lecture halls. To finalize the preparations, discussions were held between Colonel Dr. Soemantri Hardjoprakoso, Prof. Sadarjoen, and Prof. Mr. R. Iwa Kusumasumantri, leading to the issuance of the Ministerial Decree on the Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Padjadjaran on August 11, 1961.
On September 2, 1961, the Faculty of Psychology, UNPAD, was officially inaugurated at the UNPAD Hall, with Colonel Dr. Soemantri Hardjoprakoso as the Dean and Mr. Bushar Muhamad as the Secretary of the Faculty. The faculty had two unique distinctions: it was established as a faculty of psychology from the outset without evolving from another faculty, and it was inaugurated directly without having to be under the auspices of the Padjadjaran Foundation.
The first intake of students began their studies at the Army Psychology Center on Jalan Sangkuriang 17, with 30 students enrolled. Later, the faculty leadership structure was changed, with Colonel Dr. Soemantri Hardjoprakoso as the Dean, Captain Bob Dengah as the Vice Dean I, Mr. Bushar Muhamad as the Vice Dean II, and Captain Soemantri Kartosoedjono as the Vice Dean III. In 1962, the title of Vice Dean was changed to Assistant Dean, and Colonel Dr. Soemantri Hardjoprakoso was appointed as Assistant Minister of PTIP. As a result, Dr. R. Mar'at from the Faculty of Psychology of Universitas Indonesia was invited to serve as the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology, UNPAD. Under Dr. Mar'at's leadership, the lecture halls were moved to the Gedung Danawarih, Jalan Haji Wasid 31 Bandung, and in 1964, the first Bachelor's Degree Examination was held.
In 1965, the faculty relocated to Jalan Dago Pojok 23, and the campus was gradually developed to meet various needs. In 1996, the faculty gained two new buildings at the Jatinangor Campus, and since then, academic life has taken place at the Faculty of Psychology, UNPAD Jatinangor Campus.
